You’ve heard of a man cave, a place where blokes can go for their secret men’s business. But do you know about the She Shed? A place to unwind and relax, a local getaway made just for you. Could you take the opportunity to do something with a shed that makes it entirely your own?
WHAT IS A SHE SHED?
A She Shed is a place designed with the lady in mind. It’s for ladies to escape reality for a while, take some time out for yourself, and recharge so you’re ready for whatever life has to throw at you. Women all over the country have been building these sanctums to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, creating studios for their art, greenhouses for their gardens, and tea rooms for their leisure.
HOW CAN I MAKE A SHE SHED?
If you already have a shed that needs some TLC, this could be the ideal project to tackle. On the other hand, why not invest in a new one you can put your stamp on right from the start? There are many design ideas that you can take from online. You’ll never run out of inspiration.
The first thing to do is see how much room you have in your yard before you make your choice. The last thing you want to do is buy all the pieces for your shed and find out there isn’t anywhere to fit it! It’s also important to consider what sort of ground you’re building on, if you’re on a slope, and how strong the wind can get in your area.
The next thing to consider is what you’re going to build your shed out of. Plastic sheds are cheap, but often can’t stand the test of time. Timber is versatile, but gets damaged by weather, has to be repainted, and can rot. Steel is often the best bet. It’ll last decades, stand up to whatever nature (or the family) can throw at it, and some shed companies can design it however you want!
IDEAS FOR TRANSFORMING THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR SHE SHED
Think about what colours you can use for the walls of your shed. They can compliment your yard, or offer a real feature which makes a statement. We recommend Colorbond steel for this, because they have a great palette to choose from which won’t fade.
What transforms this regular old shed into a She Shed starts with what you do with it, though. So start accessorising! Soften up the walls with a trellis for roses, plant some hedges, help some vines get climbing, or add a sculpted piece of art. Hang some boxes underneath the windows and grow your favourite flowers and herbs. Why not add some pots to plant some dwarf fruit trees or lovely little bonsai? Soon, you’ll only have a hint of a door that leads into your own haven.
On the other hand, if you want to show your shed off to the world, you can get creative with external décor. Get those bright colours out, drape the roof with fairy lights which normally only come out at Christmas, and be proud of your shed!
The sky’s the limit here. It very much depends on your own likes and desires as to what you do with it. For some women, a minimalist haven is an ideal space to escape to. In contrast, you might have a dream of a small cottage, both inside and out, with lace curtains, soft furnishings and a real feeling of coziness.
The great thing is you can be inspired by lots of different ways. Searching online for she sheds turns up all kinds of results that show what other women have done in the past. We think the best places to look at for inspiration are Pinterest and Instagram. The main thing is to think about what you want to do with yours, and then create some plans on how to make it happen.
For example, you may want to make it a practical space. You might write, or paint or tackle arts and crafts projects in there. On the other hand, you may simply want an armchair and a bookshelf packed with your favourite novels. A She Shed is often a space to escape to and relax in, and this is your chance to turn it into exactly what you want it to be.
